Olivia does not seem to tell Douglas about her day with the Nawab. Explain why.
In the Novelle ‘Heat and Dust’ by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala there is one scene in which Olivia and the Nawab had a picnic together. Douglas didn’t know about this event and Olivia wants to tell him about it, but it appears to be that she is not going to do it. Olivia’s explanations for not telling Douglas are less believable. Because of the fact that Douglas is very busy she had no chance of telling him at first. Allthough they are together later on she still does not tell him about it. She never managed telling the story because Douglas loved speaking about his work and she never did get round to tell him about the picnic, refering to her letter. So these reasons Olivia gives seem to be some kind of excuse. Maybe it’s because she’s an intelligent women and does not want to be controlled by Douglas all the time, so that she keeps that secret. Or perhaps she knows about the way Douglas thinks about the Nawab and is somehow afraid of telling him about the meeting. Another reason which seems to be the most appropriate is that her relation to the Nawab is based on strong feelings, maybe love, which explains her behaviour. As a result she doesn’t tell Douglas about it because she’s not sure what to expect and she’s not really sure about her feelings to both man anymore.
